MAHLE SmartBike Systems develops drive systems for e-bikes from its headquarters in Palencia, Spain. The company is part of the MAHLE Group, a technology corporation with over 100 years of experience in drive technology and electromobility.
MAHLE SmartBike Systems develops eBike drive systems with a clear focus on lightweight integration, sporty riding experience, and smart connectivity. The product families are structured as complete systems: motor, battery, interface/control, sensors, charger, and digital services are designed to work together as a cohesive unit. This makes it possible to electrify eRoad, eGravel, eUrban, eKids, and eMTB bikes without losing their 'bike feel'.
The product range consists of two families. The X Series includes hub drive systems (X20, X30, X35, and XS), aimed at road bike, gravel, and urban applications. The M Series, with the M40 as its first product, is a mid-motor for e-MTB and versatile use. MAHLE specifically focuses on lightweight and integration. E-bikes equipped with MAHLE systems weigh under 10 kg in total. This makes the systems relevant for racers and sporty riders who want electric assistance without compromising the riding behaviour of a traditional bike.
Worldwide, more than 90 OEM partners work with MAHLE systems. In total, there are over 750,000 e-bikes with MAHLE drive systems on the market.
XS System
XS is designed for simplicity: no internal battery, just the eX1 External Battery as the power source.
That reduces components, keeps the bike slim, and enables electrification on models where an internal battery does not fit or is not desired.
In terms of use, this is suitable for riders who want a lightweight eBike with basic assistance and minimal 'eBike complexity'. The system weight is communicated as 2.5 kg with X20 and 3 kg with X30. The ecosystem also includes an XS Smart Controller (BLE + ANT+, IP54, 132 g) and the ability to manage functions such as lighting via interface and ANT+ integration.
X Series
The X Series is designed for lightweight, sporty eBikes where you want to maintain the classic riding feel: eRoad, eGravel, and eUrban. The heart is a rear hub motor in the back wheel, with batteries and interfaces that keep the system 'invisible' in the bike's construction, while remaining fully connected.
X30
X30 focuses on robustness and versatility, featuring a rear hub motor of 45 Nm that weighs 1.9 kg. Within the same platform, the ecosystem logic continues: compatibility with components and digital services from the X Series makes upgrading and configuring consistent. The system supports various riding experiences through the choice between pedal assist sensor and cadence/torque sensor configurations.
X35
X35 is the integrated, lightweight system for daily use and long rides, with a total system weight of around 3.5 kg. The rear hub motor delivers 40 Nm and weighs 2 kg, the internal battery is 250 Wh and is designed for a balance between weight and range. The control can be minimalistic via iWoc ONE (LED button) or more extensive via Pulsar ONE; ANT+ and wireless connectivity open data and settings via the My SmartBike app.
X20
X20 focuses on high-performance eBikes with a compact 275 W rear hub motor (65 Nm, 1.39 kg) and a choice of iX2 (236 Wh) or iX3 (350 Wh) internal batteries. Those who want extra range can connect an eX1 range extender (171 Wh). The operation is managed through HMI solutions such as Pulsar ONE and remote controls (eShifters/Duo Remote), and the charger is a 4A X Active Charger.
M40 SERIES
The M40 is the first mid-motor from MAHLE SmartBike Systems, developed for e-MTB and trekking.
The motor weighs 2.5 kg, delivers 105 Nm of torque and 850 W of peak power, with a power-to-weight ratio of 340 W/kg. The 48V system provides up to 400% assistance. With the iM5 battery (534 Wh), the total system weight is approximately 5 kg; the iM8 (800 Wh) achieves a range of up to 150 km.
A high-precision speed sensor detects movement within 3 cm for immediate, progressive motor response. The M40 is compatible with the ETOR crank standard and fully integrates into the MAHLE ecosystem with Head Unit+, Trio Remote, and My SmartBike app.
MAHLE delivers the lightest complete e-bike drives. Genuine e-road and e-gravel that feel like regular bicycles.
So compact that they disappear into the frame. No e-bike look, just a bike.
With the motor switched off, hardly any noticeable resistance. Flat battery? The bike remains a bike.
Automotive-grade charging technology ensures shorter charging times than the competition.
The most prestigious bicycle brands use MAHLE for their premium e-road and e-gravel models.
